It’s probably been a while since I find the current state of our politics so distressing it’s hard to write about. Democrats and mainstream media are finally realizing that the filibuster has to go (see E.J. Dionne’s recent piece in WaPo), but that still may not happen in this decade. Meanwhile the structural problems, especially with the Senate and the Electoral College, will just get worse, and it’s all but impossible to fix them. I just don’t see how the system survives 30% of the population controlling over 60 Senate seats and the possibility of even more presidents who win with a clear minority of votes. But I don’t see how that can be avoided. Wish I had a better answer, but I don’t.
